Nazarbayev University delivered a workshop on 3 October 2016 in cooperation with KIMEP University on “Institutional Research and Its Role in Academic Institutions”, for representatives of Kazakhstani Universities.
This workshop was arranged as part of the translation of NU’s experience to Kazakhstani universities and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the KIMEP University.
The two universities’ experts shared their practical experiences in a wide range of issues in this relatively new area for Kazakhstani universities, including the nature of IR, its importance in academic quality enhancement, and the use of specific techniques and methods for effective institutional research.
Doctor Nurilya Shakhanova, Director of the Division of Quality Assurance and Institutional Research, KIMEP University, shared her view on the role of this workshop:
“Institutional Research explores a variety of elements of the educational process, including teaching quality and educational infrastructure. Institutional research is a very important part of academic quality assurance activities, and has been developed both at NU and KIMEP Universities. The objective of this seminar is to share experiences of these two universities and unite the efforts of all Kazakhstani universities as a means of developing professional capacity in this area”.
Doctor Duncan Priestley, Head of Academic Quality Enhancement, Office of the Provost, NU, supported her view, stating:
“Institutional Research can make an important contribution to academic quality enhancement, particularly in the context of the Bologna Process expectations and the European Standards and Guidelines (2015). Most notably it can inform the program design and approval process, and has a key role to play in student engagement, and program monitoring and review.”
