January 25, 2017 in Astana the grand opening of the new building of the School of Medicine of Nazarbayev University, with the participation of Head of State NA Nazarbayev. The event was attended by members of the Board of Trustees of the Nazarbayev University, representatives of the Government of the RK Cabinet, the Senate and the Majilis deputies, as well as representatives of the partner University School of Medicine, and others.
The school building has 9 floors of medicine, a total area of 39,825 square meters, which houses research and teaching laboratories, simulation center, anatomical laboratory, lecture halls and rooms for group study, library, dining room and office space, as well as areas for recreation students and teachers. The building of the School of Medicine was designed by the American architectural firm Perkins + Will, who has experience in the design of medical schools.
The new building of medical school fully meets the modern requirements for training students on medical specialties. On the 5th floor of the building is a simulation center for students' clinical practice on mannequins and other medical simulators. This practice allows students to study the specific skills and then to work with patients. Moreover, the School of Medicine is actively using in their practice teaching students using standardized patients (specially trained people pretending to be patients).
Scientific laboratories, located on floors 2 and 3, will allow students to actively engage in scientific activities. Starting from the second year, students can participate in the small summer research projects in collaboration with teachers. Starting from the third year, students are obligated to participate in research projects with faculty members.
Currently, the School of Medicine has 75 enrolled students in the following programs: Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Master of Public Health (MPH). School of Medicine also trained 31 nurses within the 6-month nurse training course. In August 2017 the School of Medicine plans to launch another Master's course in Molecular Medicine.

Nazarbayev University School of Medicine (NUSOM) was opened in August 2015. The main purpose of the school is to prepare highly qualified doctors with research skills that can improve a person's quality of life, have a fundamental understanding of the medical science and are ready to contribute to the development of medicine and medical science in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The mission of NUSOM is to create a new model of medical school that trains highly qualified doctors in accordance with international standards, and transfer this model to other medical educational centers of Kazakhstan, which, in turn, will contribute to a significant improvement in the quality of trained personnel and, as a result, improve Kazakhstan citizens' health.
The vision of the school is to create a first-class center in the field of medical education, biomedical research, and patient care to improve the health and wellbeing of the population of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
