The conference was dedicated to the opening of the traveling exhibition «Energy in Transition – Powering Tomorrow», organized by the German Federal Foreign Office. This exhibition serves as an important platform for exploring the role of energy in Kazakhstan’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The conference was attended by high-profile guests, including NU President Professor Waqar Ahmad, the Ambassador of Germany to Kazakhstan, Ms. Monika Iwersen, the Ambassador of the European Union to Kazakhstan, Ms. Aleška Simkić, and others.
«Kazakhstan has expressed its commitment to combating climate change, which represents both a significant challenge and a meaningful opportunity for a country whose economy has long depended on carbon-intensive natural resources. Despite these challenges, Kazakhstan is determined to achieve the ambitious climate goals outlined in the 2013 Green Economy Transition Concept», said the President of NU in his welcoming address.
He also emphasized that, despite the leadership of regions such as Australia and North Africa in green hydrogen production, Kazakhstan has vast renewable energy potential, which offers a unique opportunity for sustainable development, though this potential remains underutilized. He further noted that the NU research team has identified three key areas that can play an important role in advancing Kazakhstan’s green hydrogen energy sector: water, renewable energy sources, and critical raw materials.
The event featured three sessions focusing on various aspects of the energy transition: Green Hydrogen in Kazakhstan: Progress and Plans (Importance for Decarbonization), Development of Renewable Energy in Central Asia, and Energy Efficiency in Buildings.
