APCDA Conference: New Look at Careers in a Rapidly Changing World

During May 16-19 2023 the NU Career and Advising Center  hosted the Asia Pacific Career Development Association (APCDA) in-person conference for the first time in Kazakhstan.

On May 17, 2023, Momoko Asaka, President of the Asia Pacific Career Development Association opened the conference stating that  after 3 years of online conferences this conference was conducted in a hybrid format. The total number of in-person was 80 and there were about 300 attendees online, representing at least                   28 countries. The attendees range from students to professors and include career advisors, career counselors, career coaches, and many others.

The conference theme, New Look at Careers in a Rapidly Changing World emphasized that Career Development should be adaptable in a rapidly changing world and that we can survive if we are flexible in honing our skills to adapt to the changes in different careers. 

During the conference the President of NU, Mr. Shigeo Katsu welcomed the participants and outlined the strategic goals of the University. 

Mr. Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education also participated in the Conference. He outlined the key priorities in higher education as a creation of a regional academic mobility hub for every region thus in 2023-2029. It  is planned to open branches of leading foreign universities offering dual degree/joint degree programs. The Minister also spoke about the Atlas of new professions and competences of Kazakhstan - a collection of professions that, according to experts of each industry, are already in demand and will appear in the near future.

 Dr. Loretta O'Donnell, NU Vice Provost for Academic Affairs mentioned future trends in Kazakhstan. In her speech, she discussed the following key career priorities and challenges and how NU deals with unstable labour market with regards to its graduates:

  • Changing job market and impact of technology on careers

  • Students need transferable skills

  • Collaboration between universities and employers

  • Diversity and inclusion

  • Emerging high demand skills

  • Lifelong learning and professional development

The conference continued with the plenary session by Dr. Tristram Hooley on the topic  “Predicting the Future in Turbulent Times: The Role of Career Development”.

The APCDA conference is an ideal platform for networking, sharing among practitioners, and identifying new resources. It is a must-attend event for professionals in the career development field, students, educators, and researchers interested in the future of work and career development.The hybrid conference will last till May 26.
