The competition gives an opportunity to learn from world’s greatest thinkers at the NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, California. SU Global Impact Competitions are staged throughout the world annually to identify talented professionals in the field of technical sciences. The university’s mission is to assemble, educate, and inspire researchers who use the rapidly developing technologies to address humanity’s grand challenges.
This contest was open to teaching assistants and young researchers working in schools and research centers of Nazarbayev University for more than one year. To participate in the contest young scientists presented their ideas, the implementation of which might affect the quality of life of a milliard people over the next ten years. The finalists were announced and then interviewed by the judging team.
The participants had to present the idea, describe the technology behind it and how this project can be brought to reality at Singularity University. The ideas of the contestants had to involve such topics as poverty, energy, education, global health, safety and environment. The winner received a scholarship to attend SU’s 10-week Graduate Studies Program (GSP) and possibly to implement the ideas that can improve the lives of millions of people.
The winner of the contest «Global Impact Competition» among young scientists of Kazakhstan became Mektepbayeva Damel, the junior researcher of Nazarbayev University Research and Innovation System. Currently, Damel works in the laboratory of cellular technology on the project of using stem cells to induce angiogenesis.

80 winners from different countries will implement their projects in GSP 2014. The training program includes seminars, hands-on training workshops, interactive group discussions, onsite visits at offices and laboratories of major technology companies as well as behind-the-scene tours at emerging startups.
The Graduate Studies Program faculty and guest speakers are renowned technology experts, leading entrepreneurs and notable CEOs dedicated to applying exponential technologies to addressing Global Grand Challenges.
