Sofia An is an Assistant Professor at the Sociology and Anthropology Department of Nazarbayev University School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She received her MD from the Kazakh State Medical University in Almaty, her Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University in New York City, and her PhD from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on post-Soviet social policy and social transformation, in particular, on the interplay of institutional continuity and change, the role of state and non-state welfare providers, and the influence of transnational policies and actors. She is also interested in examining the development of professional social work and social service provision in the post-Soviet context. At Nazarbayev University, she teaches introduction to social policy, social problems in Eurasia, and qualitative research methods.
