Alexandra Shaeffer is an Assistant Professor in the department of Languages, Linguistics, and Literatures. At Nazarbayev University, she teaches courses in Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, and French. She earned her BA in Modern Languages and Literatures from Kenyon College in Ohio where she specialized in French and Russian literature. She subsequently went on to attain her MA in French with specializations in French and Francophone Literature and Culture at Illinois State University and her PhD in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Iowa.

Her research interests lie at the intersections of applied linguistics, culture, and language pedagogy. More specifically, she currently focuses on issues in sociolinguistics, especially interlanguage pragmatics and speech codes. At the University of Iowa, she wrote her dissertation on how American millennials enrolled in upper-division university French courses perceived and produced complaints, compared to their monolingual English and French counterparts. Her current project is to publish and expand her dissertation research by exploring issues related to the influence of gender identity on opting out from complaining across cultures.
