Share this articleNU students took part in an educational visit to the Mazhilis, the lower house of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The event was organized by NU’s Department of Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies, represented by Professors Meiramgul Kussainova and Zhazira Agabekova.
The organizers emphasized the importance of such visits for students, as they provide an opportunity to learn about the work of Kazakhstan’s highest legislative body—the Mazhilis—and help foster motivation for future professional careers. These experiences also promote patriotism and a deeper respect for the homeland.
During the visit, students met with Members of the Mazhilis of the 8th convocation—Zhuldyz Suleimenova, a member of the Committee on Social and Cultural Development, and Kairat Balabiev, a member of the Committee on Legislation and Judicial Reform. The deputies spoke about the functions of the Mazhilis, the process of drafting and adopting legislation, and how members of Parliament engage with their constituents.
An active discussion followed on the current state and future development of the education and science systems in Kazakhstan, youth policy in the country, and career-building opportunities for young professionals. The deputies, in turn, praised NU for its high standards in education and research within Kazakhstan’s higher education landscape.
As part of the tour, students visited the Parliament’s Main Chamber, the Mazhilis committee meeting rooms, informational displays, and the Parliamentary Library. Library staff introduced the students to the library’s services, as well as its collection of scientific and literary works. The students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions—including about the reading preferences of the deputies.
