Nurassyl Zhumabayev, a third-year Petroleum Engineering student at the NU School of Mining and Geosciences, has taken first place in the regional round of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Paper Contest, which includes participants from Russia and the Caspian region.
As a result of this achievement, he will represent the region at the prestigious SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Houston, USA.
The SPE Student Paper Contest is a global competition aimed at identifying and supporting talented students in the field of petroleum engineering. Participants present their research in one of three categories: undergraduate, master's, or doctoral. The contest spans 14 global regions, and this year, NU will be representing one of them at the international stage. The road to the finals included several stages: abstract submission, a technical presentation, and defense before a panel of experts.
Nurassyl’s research focuses on optimizing nanoparticle-polymer solutions to enhance oil recovery under high salinity and temperature conditions. His work aims to develop efficient formulations of nanoparticles and polymers to improve oil extraction in challenging geological environments. The paper will be published on OnePetro® — the leading technical literature platform in the oil and gas industry.
