Foundation

NUFYP (Nazarbayev University Foundation Year Program) – a one year intensive program at the Centre for Preparatory Studies of Nazarbayev University. The program provides an intensive academic, scientific and language proficiency preparation to the undergraduate programs of Nazarbayev University. Education under “Nazarbayev University” state grant, as well as tuition based education are available for this program. Following the results of study at NUFYP, Nazarbayev University Schools accept students for further education at the undergraduate programs.

 

 

How to apply

Applicants must go through the online registration process to sign up for the entry examinations to the Nazarbayev University Foundation Year Program.

Step 1. Create your personal account

Go to http://admissions.nu.edu.kz portal, press the “Sign up” button and fill out the required information in the English language.

At the time of the registration Consent to personal data processing should be given according to the online form.

After completing the registration, confirm the registration and Consent to personal data processing by clicking on a link sent to your mailbox.

Read the instructions about the registration procedure given in your personal account.

Step 2. Pay the application fee

Application fee shall be paid online in your personal account at “My application forms” page via bank card.

Application fee is 3 000 tenge for citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan and 14 000 tenge for non-citizens.

If there is no card you may use the card of another person.

Please NOTE: in case of refusal from further participation in the selection process, the registration fee will not be refunded.

Step 3. Fill out the application form

Open the Foundation Program link at “My Application Forms” page and fill out the Foundation Application Form. Make sure you entered all the required information in a correct manner and after that press “Upload” button.

Step 4. Submit the required documents

After filling out the application form you are required to submit:

1. a scanned copy of a proof of your studies at a final grade/course (according to the template with photo) or certificate/diploma with transcripts if you have already completed relevant level of study;

2. applicants who created personal account before opening of the online registration on September 29, 2019 should fill out by hand, scan and upload scanned copy of a signed Consent to personal data processing to their personal account;

3. national identity card or passport.

If an applicant submits to Nazarbayev University his/her IELTS/TOEFL certificate results, an official electronic test report form of IELTS/TOEFL should be sent by the Test Administrator directly to Nazarbayev University. Applicant should also upload its scanned copy to his/her personal account.

Step 5. Finish the registration process

After completing all above-mentioned steps please press the SUBMIT APPLICATION button.

After that you cannot introduce any changes to your application form and change your submitted documents.

Further steps

Please check your e-mail 1-2 weeks before each exam – the information of upcoming exam date, time and venue along with Exam Rules will be sent there.

Please keep in mind that sometimes letters from the University may go to spam box.

If you have any difficulties with the registration process send an email to foundation_admissions@nu.edu.kz. Do not forget to indicate your IIN (for citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan) and Applicant ID number.

Entry examinations and requirements

Applicants meeting the following eligibility criteria can take part in the competition:

  1. Students in the final year of secondary education institutions;
  2. Students in the final year of technical, vocational, post-secondary and higher education institutions;
  3. Graduates from secondary, post-secondary or higher education institutions.

The selection process consists of the following stages:

  1. Stage I – APTIS;
  2. Stage II – NUFYP Entrance Test;
  3. Stage III – IELTS;
  4. Stage IV – consideration of Applicants’ files.

Applicants who failed to meet minimum score are not progressed to the next stages.

  1. APTIS – general English language assessment.
  • Assesses Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary skills
  • Number of questions – 75
  • Duration of the test – 55 minutes
  • Question type – multiple-choice questions
  • Minimum passing score – 38
  • Test result is available in 7 days

Applicants who provide a copy of TOEFL or IELTS certificate before the deadline with a minimum IELTS overall score of 6.0 (or equivalent in TOEFL) are exempted from taking the APTIS test. If applicants want to submit their IELTS/TOEFL certificate results, an official electronic test report form of IELTS/TOEFL must be sent by the Test Administrator directly to Nazarbayev University. Deadline – December 30, 2019. Applicants should also upload its scanned copy to their personal account according to the new function by December 25, 2019 (for those who have already pressed the button SUBMIT application).

  1. NUFYP Entrance Test – test that evaluates academic training for studying at the University.

NUFYP Entrance Test is held in next subject sections:

Mathematics and Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – for all majors.

  • Number of questions – 60
  • Test duration – 120 minutes
  • Question type – multiple-choice questions
  • Minimum passing score – 120 in total for 2 subjects, while passing level for each of the subjects shall not be less than 50. For example, 50 + 70 = 120 – is a minimum passing score.
  • Test result is available in 3 weeks
  1. IELTS – an international standardized academic English proficiency test.
  • Assesses Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking skills
  • Test duration – 2 hours and 54 minutes
  • Test format – written and oral parts
  • Minimum passing scores: overall score of 6.0 with no score below 5.0 in each subsection
  • Test result is available in 14 days

IELTS is conducted by NU within Stage III of the selection process.
Applicants can provide an additional copy of IELTS/TOEFL certificate which meets minimum requirements by April 20, 2020. The steps for this are as follows:

1. To send an official electronic IELTS/TOEFL certificate from the Test Administrator directly to the Nazarbayev University,
2. To upload a scanned copy and to enter certificate’s data to personal account according to the new function.

Applicants who fulfilled the requirements above may be exempted from taking IELTS within Stage III of exams. In the competition the certificate with the best results is considered.

The number of tasks and duration of tests is subject for change by test administrators.

Information about access to entry examinations is placed in Applicant’s Personal account.

Applicants are informed about examination date and venue, as well as required documents and Rules of conduct during the examination via email one week prior to the exam.

Test results are placed in a Personal account and sent to personal email.

There is no appeal procedure available.

Entry examinations for NUFYP applicants are free of charge.

The tests should be sent to the University address via test administrator using the Nazarbayev University code (Institutional Code):

  • Nazarbayev University – for IELTS
  • 6762 – for TOEFL
  • 7915 – for SAT
  • 5521 – for ACT with Writing Part
Selection process

Upon completion of the three stages of the selection process, the Admission Committee recommends applicants for admission.

The main admission criteria are as follows:

  1. NUFYP Entrance Test results
  2. IELTS/TOEFL results. In case of equal overall score, priority will be given to Applicants with the highest scores in sections by following primacy – Writing, Reading, Listening, Speaking.

The recommended applicants will receive an emailed Notification letter with the Offer of admission, the Instructions on Documents Submission, and the attachments with indication of deadlines and terms.

The applicants shall also submit additional documents to other NU departments. Therefore, please, make sure to read the Notification letter very carefully in order to meet the requirements and deadlines. All the hard copies of documents should be submitted to the University in person within the deadlines.

Any documents submitted in foreign languages shall be translated into Kazakh or Russian and notarized.

Failure to provide the required documents in time will result in Applicant’s disqualification from further participation in the competition.

List of documents to be submitted by the Applicant to the Admissions Department for enrollment on fee-paying basis:

  1. Filled out and signed Application form with a photograph;
  2. Notarized copy of identity document or passport, or a birth certificate and a certificate with your photograph from educational institution (school) for applicants under the age of 16;
  3. An original and notarized copy of a nationally recognized certificate stating completion of a secondary school, technical, vocational or post-secondary school or university or bachelor’s degree certificate or diploma of a specialist with transcript;
  4. An official electronic score report of valid Academic IELTS/TOEFL(iBT) certificate from Test Administrator or an original copy of valid TOEFL PDT (only for Applicants from the countries where IELTS and TOEFL iBT are unavailable) if an Applicant passed the test independently;
  5. Original signed Enrollment Confirmation Form;
  6. Original signed Form of Consent on Guarantee Fee Payment;
  7. Original signed Consent for personal data processing.

Applicants with SAT or ACT results meeting the above-mentioned criteria additionally shall present:

8. An official electronic score report of valid SAT Reasoning Test or an original copy of valid ACT with writing part (or its electronic copy followed by submission of an original copy by deadlines set by the Admission Committee).

In addition, foreign citizens or stateless individuals shall submit a copy of health insurance certificate valid for the entire period of studies.

All documents submitted to NU are not subject to return.

Enrollment

Based on the competition results and evaluation of Applicants’ documents, the Admission Committee recommends successful Applicants for admission to the Centre for Preparatory Studies of Nazarbayev University.

Successful completion of the three stages does not guarantee admission to the Centre for Preparatory Studies of the University.

The Applicants not included in the enrollment list under “Nazarbayev University” state grant but meeting the admission requirements shall be put in a waiting list. In case of a vacant place in the list of Applicants recommended for admission, Applicants from the waiting list may be recommended by the Admission Committee for admission to study at the University Centre for Preparatory Studies.

Applicants in the waiting list can also be offered an opportunity to participate in competition for admission on a tuition fee basis.

Applicants recommended for admission by the Admission Committee shall pay the Guarantee Fee in the amount of 30 000 tenge and submit required documents within the dates indicated in the notification letter. The Guarantee Fee will be returned to the Applicant after he or she starts the classes at NU.

Enrollment of Applicants is legalized by the decision of the University Provost.

Enrollment on a fee-paying basis

Online registration for fee-paying basis: March 2, 2020 – June 15, 2020

Following applicants can participate in the selection process for the enrollment for a fee-paying education:

  • those who took part in the selection process of the current year for state educational grants and met minimum admission requirements for NUFYP ET and IELTS (TOEFL) examinations; however, they were included in the waiting list without receiving a grant;
  • those who register on the admissions.nu.edu.kz portal and who independently passed IELTS or TOEFL, SAT or ACT with results and met the minimum admission requirements indicated below:

Minimum requirements for test results:
1) SAT Reasoning Test with essay – 1100. Writing part is required with no minimum score.
either
ACT with writing part – minimum overall score not less than 22. Writing part is required with no minimum score.

2) Academic IELTS – 6.0 (5.0 in each section)
either
TOEFL iBT – 60-78 (4-7 in Reading section; 4-6 in Listening section; 14-15 in Speaking section; 14-17 in Writing section)
either
TOEFL PDT* – 550-573 (50 in Reading, Listening sections; 2 in Writing section; Speaking section evaluated by the Admission Committee).

*TOEFL PDT is accepted only from the applicants of the countries where neither IELTS nor TOEFL iBT is available

Upon completion of the selection process, the Admission Committee recommends applicants for admission on a fee-paying basis. The above-mentioned applicants will receive an emailed Notification letter with the Offer of admission, the Instructions on Documents Submission, and the attachments with indication of deadlines and terms.

The applicants shall also submit additional documents to other NU departments. Therefore, please, make sure to read the Notification letter very carefully in order to meet the requirements and deadlines. In case of offer acceptance, the Applicants shall pay the Guarantee Fee in the amount of 30 000 tenge and submit required documents within the dates indicated in the Notification letter. The Guarantee Fee will be returned to the Applicant after he or she starts the classes at NU.
