What are the periods for the online registration to the graduate programs?

Periods for online registration:


Early admission (First Round)  from November 4, 2019 to February 16, 2020. Application fee is free of charge.


Regular admission (Second Round) from February 17, 2020 to May 12, 2020. Application fee for all the graduate programs is 5000 tenge.


What should I do, when making a registration; it shows an error that an account with this IIN already exists?

In this case, you will need to write an email to with your problem description, indicating your full name and IIN.

If I will not have enough time to fill out the online Application and submit it, do I need to recreate it for the Regular admission?

There is no such need, you continue to fill out the created Application, pay the registration fee and complete the registration for participation in the competitive selection of the Second Round.

Can I choose a specialty for the Master's program, which is different from the undergraduate program in which I` ve been studying?

You have such an opportunity, because Nazarbayev University programs do not have a list of priority specialties. However, you will have to state the reason why you want to change your specialty in your motivation letter explicitly. Acceptance of your arguments will be subjected to the consideration of the Admission Committee`s members.

Can I register for several programs at the same time?

There are no restrictions on the number of registrations for Master's and PhD programs. Therefore, you can register for several programs at the same time. However, this restriction is planned to be introduced starting from the next year.

How can I find out about the results of my Application status for participation in the competitive selection?

You can find out about your results of participation in the competitive selection in your account, where your status will be displayed. Based on the results of the competitive selection, you will definitely receive a letter of notification of your final status to the email you specified during the registration.

If I have a low level of English, can I apply to Nazarbayev University`s programs?

For applicants who have a high level of motivation to study, but do not have high level of English, NUZYP, the preparatory year of the Master's programs is developed. The applicant must have a total IELTS score of at least 5.5 to apply for this program, where a score of 5.0 is allowed in only one section.

Do all programs have a NUZYP program?

NUZYP program exists in all Masters` programs, except for programs:

  • Full-Time Master of Business Administration;
  • Doctor of Medicine;
  • Residency
Is it necessary to pass the competitive selection for the Master`s program again, after the completion of the NUZYP program?

In case of successful completion of NUZYP preparatory program, there is no need to pass competitive selection and registration for the Master's program.

Can I change my specialty after completing the NUZYP program?

Change of specialty after completion of the NUZYP preparatory program is not possible.

What to do if it is impossible to provide the results of standardized IELTS or TOEFL tests during an emergency?

In regards to the cancellation of international standardized tests due to the COVID-19 pandemic infection of coronavirus, Nazarbayev University decided to accept the results of the “Duolingo English Test” as part of the competition for the academic year 2020-2021.

Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English language test developed by Duolingo ( The test consists of 2 parts: 25-minute adaptive testing, which assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking, and a 10-minute video interview with open-ended questions. The test takes about 45 minutes. Results are certified within 48 hours. The cost of the test is $ 49 dollars.

What types of questions are included in the Duolingo English Test?

The exam part of the Duolingo English Test consists of tasks for speaking, reading, writing and listening. Based on the results of this part of the assignments, a mark is given. The second part of the test, which is not scored, includes video interviews and written work. In each task, you must answer one of the two proposed questions.

How often can I take Duolingo English Test?

You can get certified results in up to two tests in a 30-day period. The 30-day period begins when the first test is completed. This test will not be assigned to this period.

Where and when can I take the Duolingo English Test?

You can take the Duolingo English Test anytime, anywhere. You only need to provide the required technical parameters and the corresponding test environment.

What will be required when passing the Duolingo English Test?

To pass the Duolingo English Test, you need a computer with a working microphone and speakers, as well as a webcam. In addition, we ask you to download the latest version of one of the supported browsers, and recommend that you provide an incoming Internet connection speed of at least 2 Mbps and an outgoing connection of at least 1 Mbps.

If I am a graduate student, can I apply for the program without a higher education Diploma?

If you are a graduate student, then you can submit an official current transcript prepared by the registrar of your university with subsequent provision of a Diploma.

Is it mandatory to do a notarized translation of documents into English?

If the document you submit contains English version, then there is no need in its notarized translation. In other cases,  notarized translation of documents into English is necessary, because the Admission Committee members are foreigners who do not speak Russian or Kazakh languages.

How to indicate your GPA in the Application form correctly, if it is not reflected in the transcript in a 4 point system?

You can calculate your GPA using a 4-point system, with the help of online resources by yourself or specify your GPA as indicated in your transcript. In this case, an employee of the Admission Department will recount it.

If I fail to submit the IELTS certificate in time and upload it to my Application form by the time of registration for the Round free of charge, will be my candidacy considered?

In this case, your Application form will be reopened, as in the First Round, applicants with a full Application package of documents are considered only. You will need to upload the received certificate to the Application form until the registration is completed for the Second Round. Registration in this case for you will be fee paying.


Can I provide IELTS/TOEFL results after the registration deadline?

The deadline for providing IELTS/TOEFL certificates is May 12, 2020. After this period, certificates will not be accepted. Your Application package will then be rejected as one that does not meet entry requirements.


Where should I send certificates if I improved IELTS/TOEFL results until the registration is closed?

You must send the scanned version of the updated IELTS/TOEFL certificate to emails of relevant schools.

Is ALEKS test for Full-Time MBA and MEM programs fee paying?

ALEKS test is included in the registration fee. In case if you retake it the fee will be 10 000 tenge.

Where is the ALEKS test taken?

ALEKS test is taken at Nazarbayev University. The invitation to the exam is sent by the secretary of the Admissions Committee. Applicants have the opportunity to choose the day of taking tests from the list of approved dates.

What should I do if I don’t have the opportunity to come to Nazarbayev University to pass the ALEKS test?

If you do not have an opportunity to come to Nazarbayev University you must to provide GRE/GMAT exam certificates.

Who can be my referee?

Persons related to you in the academic field - professors, academic advisers, teachers, deans, i.e. those who know or knew you as a student, as well as persons associated with you in the professional field - employers, colleagues, strategic partners, etc. can be your referees.

What is the procedure for submitting recommendation letters?

The procedure of recommendation letters became fully automated. After you have pressed the “SUBMIT” button, having completed the registration of your Application form, a link will be sent to your referees to the email addresses you specified. This link allows you to provide recommendation letters with two options. The first option assumes that the referee sends his recommendation letter from the corporate email of the organization, then he does not need to prepare a recommendation letter on the form, he can click on the link to fill in only the electronic form of the recommendation letter. The second option is intended in those cases when the referee does not have corporate email, then he will need to prepare a recommendation letter on the letterhead of the organization he represents, indicating the outgoing number and date. The recommendation letter is scanned and attached also by clicking on the link. The time given to the referees for preparation of recommendation letters is 5 working days.

If my referee refuses to prepare a recommendation letter, can I indicate another one?

Yes, you can make a replacement of the referee by writing a corresponding request to your school’s e-mail, indicating the details of the new referee.

How do I choose a research topic for my PhD studies? How do I know if there are researches at the University that I want to study in the PhD program?

In order to be familiar with the topic of scientific research, you need to go to the website of the relevant school, look at the profiles of professors and their research topics, understand what is closer and more interesting for you from these studies, and formulate a topic in this area. You also have the opportunity to attend open lectures and sessions of school professors, open house days that are held throughout the year, which will help you ask for advice in the correct wording of the topic and in the preparation of a research proposal.

Do you have any requirements for the content of the motivation letter?

There are no any requirements for the content of the letter. The entire content of the letter is your copyright project. There are many resources that give some recommendations on how to prepare a motivation letter on the Internet. Some Nazarbayev University programs have requirements about the size.

What if I do not have a labor book, but there is a work experience which has been carried out?

If work experience is an optional requirement of the program, then it will be sufficient to provide data in CV. However, if working experience is a mandatory requirement, then you will need to request confirmation letters on official letterhead from organizations in which the working activity was carried out.

What is МСАТ exam?

The abbreviation MCAT stands for Medical College Admission Test. This is an exam for those who wish to study at the medical faculty of educational institutions.

MCAT is a standardized test with multiple choice of questions that assesses the skills of a future student, that is: the ability to solve complex problems, critical thinking and knowledge of the natural and social sciences, biology and other subjects that serve as a prerequisite for studying medicine.


The test consists of four parts.

  • Biological and biochemical foundations of living systems
  • Chemical and physical foundations of biological systems
  • Psychological, social and biological foundations of behavior
  • Critical analysis and reasoning.

MCAT Assessment

When compiling the MCAT, a student can score from 1 to 15 points in each of the four parts of the test. The final result is the total score of all parts of the MCAT.

Results are known after 30-35 days after the test. A student can find out this information on the official MCAT website by visiting “Get Your Test Scores” section.

Registration and payment of MCAT

Where can I take the MCAT exam?

Exam can be taken only abroad. You need to register on the website to choose the country, and the date of exam. Please note that the result must be provided before completing online registration for the Doctor of Medicine program.

What is the USMLE exam?

Only Step 1 of the USMLE test for admission to the Residency program should be passed.

USMLE Step 1 is a computer-based exam with a choice of proposed answers that tests the knowledge of subjects studied during the first two courses of a Medical University in the United States and most countries of the European Union. USMLE evaluates a physician’s ability to apply in practice the  knowledge, concepts, and principles, as well as demonstrating basic patient care skills.

  • 350 questions/7 hours + 45-minute break

Average question size: from 60 to 70 words

What is an IFOM exam?

The IFOM exam was developed by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to assess students' knowledge of the basic and clinical disciplines, which are key disciplines to the implementation of the basic functions of a physician during patient care.

The exam includes 160 questions with several possible answers, most of which are presented in the style of clinical vignette to assess the ability of subjects not only to recall, but also to apply basic knowledge of medical science in the following areas: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Histology, Cell biology, Microbiology, Organ systems, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology.

Where can I take the USMLE/IFOM exams?

What Diploma is necessary to apply for Residency Programs?

DM Diploma or equivalent medical degree (the highest level of medical qualification providing the right to receive registration or certification to practice as an independent medical doctor in the country) obtained at a recognized university in accordance with the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Is basic medical education necessary in order to participate in the competition for the Master of Public Health program?

Basic medical education is not a mandatory criterion, but when writing a letter of motivation you need to indicate the reason why you want to study this program.

Are there any Masters` programs where I can study without quitting the job?

There are programs at Nazarbayev University that allow you to study if you have full time job:

  • Educational leadership (modular studying);
  • Public administration (weekend studying);
  • Business administration for executives (weekend studying)


All other programs are full-time, not allowed with combination of work.

Is there any working after the completion of the Master's / doctoral program? What requirements and conditions are provided?

Working after completion of studying under  the Republic of Kazakhstan state fund  the Masters` and PhD programs is a requirement of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, total of  3 years which  is indicated in the Law “On Education”. This process is fully coordinated by the Financial Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Is there is a dormitory provided for Master`s and PhD students?

This year dormitory will be provided to Masters` and PhD students in order of sequence. Priority will be given to Foundation, Undergraduate as well as international students.

What is the price of living in a dormitory?

29 260 tenge - place in a 2-bed room for 1 term;

87 780 tenge - place in 1-bed room for 1 term.


What is the size of scholarship for Masters` and PhD students?

125 000 tenge – in Master programs, including NUZYP

102 498 tenge – in PhD programs

PhD students can work as research assistants with salary of  $600.

Is it mandatory to attend an Orientation week?

Attendance of an Orientation week is a mandatory requirement of your enrollment.
