International Association of Universities (IAU)

The International Association of Universities (IAU) is the UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher education institutions, founded in 1950.


The activities of IAU are aimed at promoting collaboration among its members to pursue the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge, to advocate joint learning and action, and to act as a forum for innovation, analysis and monitoring of the development of higher education.


The Association unites 650 universities and organizations from more than 120 countries. As a global network, IAU has member institutions on every continent with the following repartition:

  • Europe: 40%
  • Asia and Pacific: 24%
  • Middle East: 13%
  • Africa: 11%
  • North America: 7%
  • Latin America and Caribbean: 5%

Nazarbayev University joined IAU in 2015. There are also 9 other Kazakhstani higher education institutions in the Association.

Asian Universities Alliance (AUA)

The Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) was established on April 29, 2017. Nazarbayev University is one of the co-founder members. The opening ceremony was held in Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. About 400 professors and students representing 15 universities from 13 countries took part in the work of the first meeting of the Alliance.  


The Alliance is aimed at joint consideration of regional and global issues in the fields of higher education, economic, scientific and technological development through strengthening cooperation among member institutions.

University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR)

The University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) is a non-governmental and non-profitable organization aimed at openness and international cooperation in higher education. UASR unites higher education institutions from the countries located on the historical route of the Great Silk Road.

Within the strategy of the Chinese Government “One Belt, One Road” Xi’an Jiaotong University initiated the Academic Belt of the Silk Road in January 2015 to establish the Alliance with domestic and foreign universities from Asia, Europe, America and Australia.


UASR is aimed at promoting cooperation in the field of higher education, student exchange, enrichment of their educational experience, intercultural communication, as well as development of joint projects and research, enhancing understanding and friendship between the young people, fostering quality and all-round talents with international visions, and facilitating the economic growth of countries on the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian region.


Currently 150 universities from 38 countries and regions, including Xi’an Jiaotong University, University of Liverpool, National University of Singapore, Harbin Institute of Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Politecnico di Milano, Moscow Power Engineering Institute, Nazarbayev University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Washington University in St. Louis, California State University Northridge are members of the UASR.

European Association of International Education (EAIE)

Founded in 1989, the EAIE is the acknowledged European center for expertise, networking and resources in the internationalization of higher education.
It is a non-profit, member-led organization serving individuals actively involved in the internationalization of their institutions through a combination of training, conferences and knowledge acquisition and sharing. EAIE equips academic and non-academic professionals with best practices and workable solutions to internationalization challenges and provide a platform for strategic exchange. It partners with key stakeholder organizations and institutions to promote their membership interests, and advance international higher education in Europe and the rest of the world.
